Practical Relaxation Techniques for Sports Science Students

The Importance of Mental Regulation in Athletic Performance

The seminar entitled “Relaxation Techniques in the Service of Athletic Performance” was successfully completed for students of the BSc (Hons) Sports Science with Physical Education programme in Athens and Piraeus.

The seminar took place on 19 December 2025 and was delivered by Dr Doukas Konstantoulas, Co-Programme Leader of the BSc (Hons) Sports Science with Physical Education programme at the Thessaloniki campus. Its aim was to highlight the importance of mental regulation and relaxation techniques in enhancing athletic performance.

In today’s demanding and constantly evolving sporting environment, an athlete’s ability to manage stress, remain calm under pressure and recover mentally after intense effort is a crucial factor in performance. The seminar focused on this essential aspect of athletic preparation, complementing students’ physical and technical training.

During the session, participants had the opportunity to experience the practical application of targeted relaxation techniques through live demonstration and guided practice. Particular emphasis was placed on breathing control and diaphragmatic breathing, muscle relaxation exercises for physical and mental release, and mental imagery and present-moment focus as tools to enhance concentration and psychological resilience.

The strong engagement and active participation of students throughout the seminar highlighted the value of integrating mental skills training into the education of future sports professionals. All participants who completed the required participation process received a certificate of attendance.

This seminar forms part of the program’s wider educational initiatives, aimed at continuously enhancing students’ knowledge and skills by effectively linking theory with practical application.
