The 21st century has been characterised as the age of biosciences. Biology is an essential pillar of biosciences and the wonderful thing about it, is its enormous breadth. Biologists can study everything from the simplest form of life on this planet such as an amoeba to the most complex object in the universe. They may end tackling issues concerning global warming or even designing new organisms.

A biology graduate may end up in an immensely diverse range of roles, from discovery of innovative molecules to monitoring and preservation of a habitat.

The programme consists of three streams:

  • Programme offered in collaboration with the University of Essex, “University of the Year”Times Higher Education Awards 2018.
  • One year of free membership of the Royal Society of Biology.
  • Aegean College is the only college in Greece offering a biology degree.
  • Modern lab.
  • Educational visits to ecosystems rich in biodiversity.

The Biology Department utilizes the biology laboratory in the Athens premises 6th floor, for laboratory/clinical simulations learning and includes, among others:

  • Fume hood biosafety class II
  • Laminar flow (PCR work station)
  • Incubator
  • Centrifuge
  • lab weight balances
  • pipette sets of various volumes
  • education microscope
  • stirrer / heater
  • water bath
  • refrigerator 4oC/-20oC
  • vortex
  • rocket
  • pH meter
  • photometer (cuvettes)
  • PCR  thermal cycler
  • UV lamp
  • gel electrophoresis
  • liquid sterilization microwave
  • a variety of reagents
  • glassware
  • safety-protection equipment (gloves, googles)

Furthermore, the computing laboratory is fully equipped with computers, appropriate software for statistical processing for biology students (i.e.: Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Moreover, appropriate software for the bioinformatics module will be installed. Furthermore, there is an established collaboration with Genotypos Science Lab, a state of the art laboratory in molecular genetics, genomics and cytogenetics in which students will conduct experiments and projects. Ultimately, it allows for access to AOC Moodle resources.

Graduates can work as specialists in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation:

  • Research centres,
  • Environmental organisations,
  • NGOs.
