The second-year students of the Chemistry Department at Aegean College, Athens, successfully participated in an educational visit to the Institute of Biosciences and Applications at the National Center for Scientific Research (NCSR) “Demokritos.” They were accompanied by Dr. Angeliki Panagiotopoulou.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to explore the institute’s state-of-the-art equipment, gaining in-depth knowledge about the operation and capabilities of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and circular dichroism spectrometers. Exposure to this advanced technology provided valuable insights into their applications in contemporary sciences.
Additionally, the participants attended a concise yet comprehensive presentation on the drug discovery process, acquiring a thorough understanding of the stages involved in the development of new pharmaceutical formulations. They also engaged in an intensive session on optical microscopy, actively participating in the process of capturing images of fluorescent molecules using the institute’s modern confocal microscope.
The visit concluded with histology experiments, which allowed students to gain hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of tissue analysis and study techniques. These experiments offered significant practical skills, enhancing the students’ proficiency in specialized methods relevant to chemistry and biosciences.
This visit was a unique experience for the students of Aegean College, combining theoretical knowledge with practical application. The participants returned with enhanced expertise, inspiration, and enthusiasm to further pursue their scientific and research interests.
