Advance HE Transformational Change Academy

Aegean College is redefining its academic programs for the future of education

Aegean College participates in the Advance HE Transformational Change Academy

The social and economic changes currently taking place worldwide could not but affect the field of Higher Education. As the academic community strives to equip young people for a successful future, innovations such as the integration of Artificial Intelligence in Education, new demands in the workplace, the broad participation of people from all social classes and age groups, and the, oftentimes, unequal distribution of technological resources, pose a major challenge for Higher Education institutions.

Within this context, a critical question has emerged—one that prompted Aegean College to participate in Advance HE’s Transformational Change Academy from January through June 2026. What kind of graduates should education produce today, and how can curricula be designed to be both inclusive and value-creating?

The goal set by Aegean College through its participation in the Transformational Change Academy was to redefine its curricula so that they link human potential with the use of Artificial Intelligence, inclusion with transparency in assessment, as well as a sense of belonging among the student body.

These initiatives resulted from an assessment of the internal and external environment, which is currently characterized by intense digital transformation, ‘green’ growth, and increasing demands of the job market—all of which, of course, are changing what today’s prospective students need to know.

The College is pleased to attract students from diverse backgrounds and with varied characteristics. This means that it must take into account factors such as balancing studies and work, family obligations, financial and academic challenges, etc. These factors now also determine how a curriculum is perceived in practice—one that aims not only to promote inclusion as an idea but also to make it an integral part of students’ daily lives.

But how does this work in practice?

Aegean College’s curricula provide students with clear guidelines and set out the expectations for them right from the start. Key factors here are transparency in assessment methods, so that no one feels unfairly treated, as well as the alignment of the programs with relevant opportunities in the job market.

Even before participating in the Transformational Change Academy, the College had begun raising issues related to the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, Sustainability, and the Circular Economy. However, it quickly became apparent that any effort to support students through faculty, programs, seminars, or other local initiatives would have only a temporary effect unless it were actively integrated into an organized policy and assessment processes.

Based on this, the greatest challenge was how to translate strategic priorities into a practical redesign of the curricula. Through the Transformational Change Academy, the College had the opportunity to operate within a structured environment that served as a catalyst, enabling a simple idea and ambition to be transformed into a significant redesign.

Particular emphasis was placed on the following changes:

  • The creation of a unified and clear framework for understanding terms such as “human skills of the future, the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, inclusive pedagogical methods, a sense of belonging, and transparency in assessment methods.
  • Strategic goal-setting, based on educational research and the need to identify areas requiring improvement.
  • Linking the existing educational process with transformation through a shared path.

However, in order to achieve the above within a framework that prioritizes the student and the creation of a supportive environment for their development, specific goals had to be set.

These were as follows:

  • Ensuring that students, upon entering today’s job market, will possess skills that are well-founded, applicable, and, as far as possible, not at risk of being replaced by automation.
  • Emphasis is placed on strengthening critical thinking, communication, adaptability, and responsibility in social and political life.
  • Empowering the workforce and aligning curricula with the job market and its needs.
  • Transparency in assessment and its practical implementation, particularly at a time when the use of AI often makes it difficult to identify critical analysis, in-depth understanding of the subject matter, and clear argumentation in student work.
  • An emphasis on inclusion and equality through a curriculum designed to cater to students with diverse backgrounds and an academic environment that provides them with practical support whenever they need it.
  • The students’ understanding of the usefulness and practical applicability of what they are learning, so that they can develop their own unique professional identity, solve everyday problems, and be productive in their work.
  • The continuous training and professional development of academic staff, so that they remain fully informed about technological and educational developments, have the skills to design programs with freedom and consistency, and conduct evaluations guided by the principle of inclusion.
  • Designing not just a program with short-term results, but a model that can serve as a foundation for redesigning educational programs at all levels.

The goals that were set have not remained merely theoretical; they have already begun to be implemented in practice within Aegean College’s programs. Notable examples include the School of Business Administration, where great emphasis is placed on Sustainability, ESG, Digital Transformation, Artificial Intelligence, project management and day-to-day operations, and business ethics. Another example is the English Language Teaching program, which emphasizes the effectiveness of distance learning through the use of technological tools, as well as the responsible use of AI in research, presentations, and podcasts. Overall, in the College’s other programs—whether they pertain to the Natural Sciences, such as Chemistry and Biology; the Technological Sciences, such as Computer Science; or Cognitive Psychology and Neuroscience— the goal is to implement a unified policy that emphasizes, on the one hand, new technologies and AI, but on the other hand, the preservation of the integrity of research based on ethical values, Sustainability, and Inclusion.

The priority, in any case, is a coherent and consistent curriculum, with clear and well-defined learning outcomes and a connection to the job market. However, this coherence does not mean standardization or uniformity. It means that each program is based on a new educational model—one that is more modern and practical—which meets the needs of both the academic discipline itself and the students.

What are the key changes Aegean College has made to its program design?
  • The emphasis on the physical and mental health of its students, who come from diverse backgrounds and have different needs and expectations regarding their education. It is possible that some students did not have access to comprehensive preparation prior to their university education. These students need greater clarity in the curriculum, a balanced distribution of coursework, support during the transition, and more feedback.
  • Preventing and addressing students’ difficulties before they become obstacles to their success. The College promotes open communication and designs curricula that support early risk identification, immediate feedback, and the establishment of clear expectations for students.
  • The learning outcomes focus on the responsible use of AI, analytical and critical thinking, Sustainability, decision-making, and research ethics. In terms of inclusion, emphasis is placed on the transparency of educational and assessment processes, with enhanced support for the most vulnerable communities.
  • Most important, however, is the shift in mindset achieved through participation in the Transformational Change Academy. We are moving from isolated initiatives related to specific programs to a forward-looking policy that can be applied comprehensively across all of the organization’s academic programs for the benefit of the students.

Aegean College remains steadfast in its belief that the introduction of new technologies alone is not enough to prepare the students of the future. Everything must begin, first and foremost, with an educational goal, which in this case is for students to feel that the programs not only equip them but also support them. The same applies to teaching and assessment methods, which must be clear from the outset and aim to provide meaningful feedback. Over the next 6–12 months, it will become clearer how the goals that were set are being implemented in practice and what needs improvement.

In conclusion, Aegean College’s participation in the Advance HE Transformational Change Academy provided it with a fertile ground to continue working effectively toward improving its academic programs, redefining its academic goals, to evaluate its faculty accurately and transparently, and to provide them with ongoing professional development. The next phase will see the College assess the effectiveness and quality of the adjustments it has implemented and encourage its student body to build their personal and professional identities with an eye toward the future.
