The undergraduate programmes of Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Sports Science of Aegean College, in the context of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is celebrated every year on 3rd of December, organised an experiential workshop on disabilities. The purpose of this activity is to promote understanding on disability issues and mobilise for the rights of dignity and well-being of persons with disabilities.
The guest of honour was Mr Yannis Polonyfis, a musician and swimming athlete with a visual disability. Mr. Polonyfis, with great talent, played the keyboard and sang two new songs from his personal album, with his own music and lyrics. He then spoke to the students of Aegean College about his experiences and encouraged them not to be shy to talk to people with disabilities, to ask questions and to learn.
This was followed by an interactive workshop on disability by Dr. Spay and Ms. Alexiou aimed at developing empathy. In particular, there was a brief introduction to Sign Language, reading and writing with the Braille system and activities simulating sensory and other disorders.
Aegean College recognises and celebrates the achievements of people with disabilities and diversity.
