The University of Essex continues to rank among the top universities globally in 2025. Specifically, it is placed in the 351-400 range out of more than 2,800 academic institutions worldwide, positioning it in the top 12%, according to the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025.
The THE World University Rankings provide the definitive list of the world’s best universities, with a strong focus on their research mission.
It is the only ranking system that evaluates research universities across all core missions: teaching (learning environment), research environment (volume, income, and reputation), research quality (research outputs), industry (knowledge transfer), and international outlook (staff, students, and research).
This ranking uses 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons. The overall list is accompanied by 11 subject-specific rankings.
Following the Guardian Good University Guide 2025, which recognized the University of Essex as the top British university with a presence in Greece, the THE World University Rankings 2025 reach the same conclusion.
